The history of Tuffbad: About 200 years ago monks from Maria Luggau, a well-known pilgrimage place with the only cathedral in Carinthia and about 6 km away from Tuffbad, found the spring with the mineral water, streaming out of ancient rocks with a temperature of about 12 degrees Celsius. In 1972 the healing power of the calcium-magnesium-sulphate hydrogen carbonate spring was officially state-approved. It is especially ideal for inner organs, such as the gastrointestinal tract, as well as the entire musculoskeletal system. Magnesium also helps to reduce stress. The monks who used the spring were said to get as old as Methuselah. The old spa – Tuffbad Wirt – was built by the neighbourhood Wiesen – Xaverieberg; the new one by the tourism board Lesach Valley in 1987.
The history of our house: the story of our family business „Obernosterer“ goes back to 1972 when Anna and Anton Obernosterer, the parents of senior manager Gabriel, bought the old hotel and restaurant „Paternwirt“ in Maria Luggau. Count Porcia had built and given it to the monks of the monastery in Maria Luggau in 1660. The old house was entirely renovated by Anna and Anton Obernosterer in a record time of only one year while its restaurant was operating as usually.
In 1980 Gabriel took over „Paternwirt“ and got married to Angelika. Eva-Maria was also born that year, Gabriel jun. followed in 1983. Again linked to the history of the monks who found the spring in Tuffbad, the holiday village „Tuffbad Dörfl“ was built by Angelika and Gabriel in only 9 months in 1992 and opened in May 1993. The spa was taken at rent from the tourism board. Then the next dream was realized step by step. The ground-breaking ceremony on 12 September, 2002 was the official beginning of the building of the 1. Almwellness-Hotel Tuffbad although it was pouring with rain that day. Despite the challenges of the alpine landscape and the bad weather conditions its roof was already finished before Christmas. When it was officially opened on 27 May, 2003 1.500 people admired the 1. Almwellness-Hotel Tuffbad. In the mean time both children have joined the family business. Eva-Maria, who has attended the tourism college in Klessheim, is responsible for all daily management procedures in Almwellness-Hotel and gets greatly supported by her husband and sommelier Egon Oberluggauer. Their daughter Estella has been born on 12 April, 2007; their son Enrico has been born this Christmas. After an apprenticeship as cook at the hotel and restaurant Unterwöger in Obertilliach, Gabriel jun. manages the kitchen in „Paternwirt“ together with his wife Eva. Kom. Rat. Gabriel Obernosterer sen. has been elected member of the provincial government in November 2006.
